Social NetworkWith new social networking sites popping up left and right,
www.myspace.com has managed to keep going strong. Like other social
networking sites, myspace.com allows its users to communicate with each
other and share pictures, but what sets it apart is its devotion to
musical artists, and the music industry in general.
The Myspace Music portion of the website provides a unique platform for
bands to expand their fan base. Aside from being able to share photos,
communicate with fans, discuss their sound, and list concert schedules,
Myspace Music allows artists to have their music heard. Artists have the
option of posting free songs, music videos, and footage of live
performances, all in the name of trying to attract more followers or get
signed to a record label. For bands more concerned with earning income,
Myspace allows the option of making an entire discography available for
purchase. This has proven to be a godsend to many young acts that have
been discovered by record labels through Myspace, or even been signed to
the Myspace Records label. Acts all over the world have found success
this way, be it a small garage band, or performers as famous as Sean
Kingston.
Although Myspace is currently regarded as a music site first, there are
still many people that use it as a social networking site. Its features
in this realm do not exactly distinguish it from other sites, but this
is largely due to the fact that other sites have used myspace.com as a
model. The socializing aspect of Myspace is aimed to help users stay in
touch with old friends while meeting new ones. This goal is attempted by
allowing customers to post pictures, write blogs, describe interests,
and send messages to other members.
Myspace has undoubtedly accomplished its goal of keeping people
connected, but it has not done so without its share of problems. The
impersonal nature of Myspace has had a negative influence on some people
who use the platform to share information and pictures they would be
far less comfortable dispensing in a more intimate setting. As a result
Myspace has been a hotbed for cyber stalking and bullying, as well as a
vehicle that creates potentially hazardous situations when online
"friends" meet face to face. Despite its drawbacks, Myspace remains a
sound option for bands and people looking to social network, as long as
they precede with caution.
