the world’s largest university with a student population of over 3
million students. Established in 1985, the primary objective of this
university is to provide higher education opportunities through a
distance and open education mode, to the more disadvantaged segments of
society.
IGNOU also serves as a national resource center that sets and
coordinates the standards for distance and open education in India. The
university currently offers 338 programs of study that include over
3,500 courses at levels that range from doctorate to bachelor’s and
master’s degree programs. The University also offers various
under-graduate and post-graduate certificate and diploma courses. More
information can be found at http://www.ignou.ac.in/.
With 43 regional centers, 6 sub-regional centers and 1,400 study
centers, students have the advantage of combining conventional classroom
lectures with distance education material. This material is developed
by a large number of experts from some of the premier institutions of
India. Some courses which were previously restricted to classroom
lectures, have now become available through IGNOU’s distance learning
program.
The university offers 21 schools of study, with a faculty highly
trained in distance education methodology. State-of-the-art multi-media
support is offered to all academic programs and includes audio, video,
radio, television, interactive radio and video counseling and
tele-conferencing. Over time, IGNOU has gained a reputation as a center
for excellence in teaching, research and training.
As part of its social intervention initiative, IGNOU serves as a center
for extension education, providing various need-based literacy and
education programs in the community. IGNOU also runs a popular 24 hour
TV channel - Gyan Darshan - devoted exclusively to education. Not only
is IGNOU a conventional university, but is also the statutory body in
charge of accrediting Open University and distance education systems in
India. The IGNOU website at ignou.ac.in provides extensive information
about the university and the programs offered.
