ticketsIn an effort to raise efficiency and keep up with the growing demands of
European travelers, Dublin bus implemented the Network Direct project
which helps to improve routes and update schedules. Phase II of this
project began in early 2011 and expanded routes to better serve Howth
Road and Portmarnock with 161 more routes added in July.
Dublin Bus is a mass transit system designed to meet the needs of the
entire community in Dublin, Ireland. All buses are equipped with
computers to offer (RTPI) Real Time Passenger Information. Predicting
arrival times at bus stops is quickly calculated by using advanced
technology with GPS (Global Positioning System) and an automatic vehicle
location transmitter. On-board software is regularly updated every 30
seconds. Timetables and a route planner are available online at
dublinbus.ie. The route planner uses a geographic based system to map
out the 5000 bus stop locations throughout the Dublin area. By simply
keying in the start point address and then the destination address, the
system will provide the transport options available. Once the preferred
transport option is selected, then click through to access the
timetable.
Smartphone apps are available now for free at the online itunes store
along with an android app by the end of November. Transport for Ireland
apps will be appropriated through the National Transport Authority once
the multi-operated web service is accessible. A travel assistant scheme
is available to accompany anyone with visual impairment, is wheelchair
bound, or uses a cane. There are no limits as to how many service dogs
may be permitted on board a Dublin bus. Low bus floors are designed to
provide room for buggies. For more information, please visit the website
at www.dublinbus.ie.
Ticket fares are based upon the number of stages traveled. Most
journeys take 1 to 3 stages. Prepaid smartcards and student cards are
available at over 400 ticket agents throughout Dublin. Children under
the age of 3 years travel free, when accompanied by a fare paying
customer.
