Businesses in Ireland must register and update annually certain information to the Companies Registration Office (CRO). Falling under the authority of the Department of Jobs, Enterprise, and Innovation the CRO registers company incorporation and business names. All businesses operating within Ireland , local and international, are required to register.

One function of the CRO is to incorporation of new companies in Ireland. It also registers business names. A business name is a trading name, which differs from the names of the owner or company. Companies included on the register have a legal obligation to file certain documents with the CRO. Annual returns, annual accounts, changes in the registered office and company officers are received and processed. This is not an exhaustive list. The CRO maintains records of mortgages and imposed charges on companies.

The CRO is also obligated by law to enforce the Companies Act. They have available a variety of measures to punish companies who fail to file the annual returns. These include removing the company from the register and charging the company or its officers. Being struck off the register removes the protection of limited liability for the individuals associated with it, who are liable for any claims after the date of removal. The companies assets become the property of the Republic of Ireland. It is possible to have the company reinstated, but this is usually a very expensive process.

Vital information, the name and office address of the company is available at no cost to the public. Information may be requested on the Website, www.cro.ie. More complete information may be obtained by requesting a printout or copy of documents on file for a small fee. CRO is encouraging the use of its Website, CRO.IE as a vehicle for the submission of required annual reports as well as a portal for the public to gain access information. All documents received by the CRO by mail are scanned into the files to ensure accurate public access to all the information it has.
