or services before actually paying for them. Yelp is a service in which
anyone can sign up to write reviews on their favorite businesses and
services. All a potential reviewer needs to do is log on to www.yelp.com
and create a profile. Registering for the site is free and allows users
to review any physical establishment that they may have gone to
(Restaurant, barber, etc.). Yelp compiles all reviews and gives each
business a rating between 1 and 5 stars. These reviews can also be
viewed locally so that users may find potential places they want to do
business with that are within their area.
In addition to allowing customers to review their experiences, Yelp
allows businesses to register to the site for free. Upon registration
business may post pictures and interact further with their customers.
Business owners even have the option to comment on the Yelp reviews they
have received. Businesses also have the option to become sponsored ads,
which does require a fee. Yelp stresses that paid advertisers receive
no additional benefits(such as a higher ranking or being able to delete
bad reviews) besides increased exposure.
There are a number of ways to access Yelp. One way is directly logging
onto yelp.com. A notable feature is that Yelp is also available as an
app for mobile devices. Supported devices for the Yelp app include
Android, Iphone/Ipod Touch, Blackberry, Windows, and Palm Pre. There is
also a mobile yelp website (m.yelp.com) that can be accessed from any
internet capable device.
